Samsung has been in the forefront of using green mobile phones and now releases what is reputed as the world’s first eco-friendly full touchscreen smartphone – the Samsung Blue Earth. First revealed at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the new Samsung touchscreen is expected to hit the markets this month in time for your holiday shopping. It has launched in Sweden in October and should be appearing in France, Germany and other European countries as this article is written.
Earth-Friendly Features
Even its packaging box is made of recycled paper products and the ink to print on it is made of Soya (whatever greening value that has).What makes the Blue Earth green? Firstly it has the features shared with older eco-friendly handsets that use recycled plastics for its body. It uses Post Consumer Materials or recycled plastics from discarded water bottles stripped of harmful substances like as PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), Phthalate and BFR (Brominated Flame Retardants). In addition, its production methods used lower energy consumption as carbon emission. Even its packaging box is made of recycled paper products and the ink to print on it is made of Soya (whatever greening value that has).
The green handset comes with a matching 5-star rated green battery charger that Samsung claims consumes no more than 0.03W of power. Talking about powering up the Blue Earth, it has the usual solar charging panels that dominate its back cover apart from its camera lens.
Sunlight is considered one of the most environment friendly energy sources that greatly reduces your dependence on using non-renewable power sources.
Using the phone shows its eco-friendly bias. It has the Eco Mode switch that allows power conservation, dimming its backlight and turning off its Bluetooth after a few minutes when not in use. It has phone apps like the Eco-Walk that counts our steps when walking and the reduction in CO2 emission when taking the train or bus instead of your car.
Now for the Phone Features
What makes the Blue Earth stand out is that it combines its eco-friendliness with state of the art mobile phone features. The Samsung Blue Earth doesn’t disappoint here. It’s your basic quad band GSM and3G/HSDPA/HSUPA for super-fast internet surfing on the road. You get a 3†Wide-VGA capacitive touchscreen with auto-rotate accelerometer. There’s a competitive 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash, geo-tagging from its GPS receiver, face recognition and VGA video recording at 15fps.
You have usual microSD for up to 16GB external memory, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and A2DP, WiFi 802/11b/g and stereo FM radio with RDS. This is certainly another competent touchscreen smartphone that will complicate your Christmas shopping list. And it’s green besides.
