Metallic Silver Shine
I found an old photograph and want to know if there is a way to determine how old it is by it's type?
It is a black and white photograph. When it's held at an angle in the light, the black regions shine with an almost silver metallic quality. It appears that the image is etched directly onto the paper. On the back of the photo, near the lower right-hand corner, there is a light number 5 that appears to be part of the paper it is on. The paper has no manufacturer name on it, just that number. The photo is of the birthplace of Edna St. Vincent Millay, an american poet who was born in Rockland, Maine in 1892. I found the photo in an old book, 'Modern American Poetry - A Critical Anthology printed in 1936, that I purchased at a second-hand bookstore. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, photos can be dated by the type of paper and the coating. I do not know much about it though but did get some photos dated at a paper show once. Most of the people there were into cards. but a few went nuts over a set of photos I had( an early tractor working then a farmer working on fixing the thing.) Keeping your eyes open at auctions may also help you find local historians are a wealth of such knowledge. Keep hunting, you will find a photo buff real close. A Fan site may also be able to help you based on the background and tree growth in the photo.
