Suntan Off Black
I've stupidly taken the positive lead off the battery in my 1998 Skoda first. Safe to touch neg with spanner?
I'm trying to change the alternator in my Skoda Felicia and someone told me to take off the red positive wire first from the battery which I did. There is still a black lead connected to the positive terminal. A further black lead is still connected to the negative terminal.. Got the top sliding bolt off the alternator, took off a lead connected by a two pin plastic connector and went to take off other electric connection going to the center of the alternator. Sparks flew when I touched it with the spanner and the spanner left my hand quickly so obviously there was still some charge in there!!
Am I safe to disconnect the negative lead now or am I going to get a free perm and suntan?! Have I probably blown all the electrics too as the flying sparks were accompanied by a bang and an unpleasant burning smell?

Undo this connection... all will be okay. As a general rule, you undo the battery "earth" connection when working on car electrical components. The "earth" wire is the (large) one which runs from the battery (usually negative) terminal to a point on the car body or chassis. You had removed the other lead, so while working on the car, your spanner touched an earth (car body etc.) and connected the loop, hence the sparks. Reconnect after you have changed the alternator, positive first followed by the earth wire.
